Most people arrive at harmonium notes from one of two directions. Either you have an instrument in front of you and no idea which key is which, or you have found a page of song notes online — Sa Re Ga Ma Pa, or something denser with dots and lowercase letters — and no idea how to turn that into finger movements. This page handles both.
What it does not do is re-teach the notation system itself. Where the notes sit on a harmonium
The single most useful fact about harmonium notes is that the keyboard is a piano keyboard. Not similar to one — the same. Seven white keys and five black keys repeating in the familiar pattern of two-blacks, three-blacks. Every interval is identical. Anyone who has ever found middle C on a piano already knows how to navigate a harmonium.
That pattern is also how you orient yourself without counting from the end of the instrument. The five black keys per octave come in a group of two and a group of three. The white key immediately to the left of any group of two black keys is C. The white key immediately to the left of any group of three black keys is F. Those two anchors are enough to name every other key by walking up or down the alphabet.
If you set Sa to C — which is what most beginner material assumes — then Sa is the white key just left of every pair of black keys. That one sentence gets most people unstuck.

Two details in that table trip people up. First, Sa and Pa have no variants — there is no komal Sa and no tivra Pa. They are fixed anchors, which is exactly why the drone plays those two notes. Second, Ma is the only swara that goes sharp rather than flat. The other four altered notes are all komal (flattened); Ma alone has a tivra (raised) form. That asymmetry is why five black keys serve seven swaras.
Notes of harmonium across the three saptaks
A saptak is an octave. Indian music names three of them, and any written passage assumes you know which one you are in:
- Mandra saptak — the low octave, below your Sa. Written with a dot underneath the syllable.
- Madhya saptak — the middle octave, where most singing and most beginner material lives. Written plain, with no dot.
- Taar saptak — the high octave, above your Sa. Written with a dot above the syllable.
On a physical instrument these are just the same twelve keys repeating further left or further right. A 39-key harmonium gives you roughly three and a quarter octaves, so you get a full mandra, a full madhya, a full taar, and a few extra keys at one end. A 42-key model stretches that to about three and a half. Neither gives you more note names — only more places to find the same twelve.

Notation conventions for the dots vary between books and websites — some use apostrophes, some use a raised dot, some use nothing at all and rely on context. The direction is what matters: below means lower, above means higher.
How to find Sa on any harmonium
Sa is not a pitch. It is a decision. This is the part that most confuses players coming from a Western instrument, where middle C is middle C and that is the end of it.
On a harmonium you pick a key, declare it Sa, and every other swara is then defined by its distance from that key. The notes of harmonium music are all relative. Change your Sa and you have transposed the entire piece without rewriting a single syllable.
Three practical ways people choose:
- Sa on C. The default for written material and for anyone learning alone. Every printed chart you find will assume this unless it says otherwise.
- Sa to match a singer. Play a few candidate keys, have the singer hold a comfortable low note, and put Sa where their voice sits easily. Female vocalists commonly land higher than C; male vocalists commonly land lower. Black keys are perfectly normal choices here.
- Sa to match a recording. If you are learning a song from a specific performance, find the tonic of that recording and set Sa there, or accept that you will be playing in a different key from the original.
Once you have chosen, set the drone to the same Sa before you practise. Playing harmonium notes against a drone on the wrong tonic will train your ear toward the wrong intervals, and that is genuinely hard to undo later.
Reading harmonium song notes
Search for the notes for any Bollywood song, bhajan or devotional piece and you will get something that looks roughly like this:
The conventions used across most harmonium song notes are consistent enough to learn in a few minutes:
- Capital letters — the shuddha, natural form of the swara. Re is shuddha Rishabh, a white key when Sa is on C.
- Lowercase, or an underline — komal, the flattened form. re is komal Rishabh, the black key just left of it.
- An apostrophe after Ma — tivra Ma, the raised fourth. Written variously as Ma', MA or M♯.
- Vertical bars or spacing — beat groupings. Each bar is usually one rhythmic cycle segment.
- A dash or hyphen — hold the previous note for another beat rather than striking a new one.
- Two syllables squeezed together — both fall inside one beat, so play them twice as fast.
What these notes will almost never tell you is the tempo, the exact rhythm, or the ornamentation. Written harmonium notes are a skeleton. They record which pitches in which order, and leave everything that makes the piece sound like the recording to your ear. This is a feature of the tradition rather than a shortcoming of the notation — Indian music has always treated the written form as a memory aid, not a score to be executed literally.
A worked example
Take Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Dha Ni Sa˙. With Sa on C, that is: C, D, E, F, G, A, B, C — the plain major scale walking up one octave. Now take Sa re Ga Ma Pa dha Ni Sa˙. Two syllables went lowercase, so two notes moved to the black key on their left: C, C♯, E, F, G, G♯, B, C. That is the ascending line of raga Bhairav, and you produced it by changing nothing but letter case.

The middle octave deliberately starts on r rather than at the left edge of the row, so that the right hand rests in a natural position. A second set of keys doubles up the notes that fall awkwardly between the two rows: 1 q 2 w 3 e reach the upper half of the lower octave, and , . / l ; reach the lower half of the middle octave — so you can play across the join without moving your hands.
Two settings on the player make this page directly usable. How to practise harmonium notes
Note charts are reference material, and reference material does not make anyone fluent. What actually builds recall is a small amount of deliberate work, repeated:
- Name before you play. Say the swara out loud, then press the key. Playing silently from a chart trains your eyes, not your ear.
- Always practise against the drone. Every swara has a character that only exists in relation to Sa. Without the drone you are learning key positions; with it you are learning music.
- Learn one octave properly before spreading out. Fluency in the madhya saptak transfers upward and downward almost for free. Fluency spread thinly across three octaves transfers nowhere.
- Practise the komal notes specifically. The shuddha swaras come quickly because they are the white keys. The flats are what separate one raga from another, and they need their own attention.
- Sing what you play. Even badly. The connection between the syllable, the pitch and the key is what you are actually building, and singing forces all three together.

How many notes does a harmonium have?
It depends on the size. A 39-key harmonium covers about three and a quarter octaves, and a 42-key model about three and a half. Within any one octave there are always 12 notes — 7 white keys and 5 black keys — laid out exactly like a piano. So a 39-key instrument gives you 39 individual notes, but only 12 distinct note names, repeated across the octaves.
Which key is Sa on a harmonium?

Why do the same harmonium notes sound different on two instruments?
Reed harmoniums drift. Reeds age, the tuning shifts by a few cents, and different makers voice their reeds differently — brighter or more nasal. Two instruments playing the same written note can sit noticeably apart in both pitch and timbre, which is why players tune the drone to the instrument rather than the other way round.
