Happy Birthday — Harmonium Notes

The full melody in sargam, Western keys and Hindi — with a player below that lights up the keys, line by line, so you can copy each phrase at your own speed.

Happy Birthday is the most-requested first song on any keyboard instrument, and the harmonium version is friendlier than most: the whole tune uses one black key, every phrase starts on the same note, and the only real jump is a single octave leap in line three. If you can hold steady bellows pressure through six notes, you can play this today.

Happy Birthday in sargam, line by line

Sa is on C. Capital letters are shuddha (natural) swaras, n is komal Ni (the B♭ black key), and is the Sa one octave up. Each ▶ plays just that line on the keyboard above — turn on 🐢 Slow while you learn.

S S R S M GHappy birthday to you
S S R S P MHappy birthday to you
S S Ṡ D M G RHappy birthday dear …
n n D M P MHappy birthday to you

The same notes as Western keys

LineKeysSargam
1C C D C F ES S R S M G
2C C D C G FS S R S P M
3C C C↑ A F E DS S Ṡ D M G R
4B♭ B♭ A F G Fn n D M P M

C↑ is the C one octave above where you started. The two B♭ notes in line four are the only black keys in the whole song — musically they are the komal Ni that gives the final line its gentle landing.

How to actually learn it

  1. Play line one on repeat until your fingers stop thinking. It is six notes, and lines one and two differ only in their last two notes.
  2. Practise the octave jump alone. Line three's S → Ṡ leap is the only technical moment in the song. Play S Ṡ back and forth until the distance feels physical, not counted.
  3. Find the two B♭s before you need them. Put a finger on komal Ni while playing line three, so line four starts without a hunt.
  4. Then add the bellows. On a real harmonium — or with the pump bar on our web harmonium — keep the air moving between notes, not just on them. The tune only sounds like a harmonium when the notes touch each other.
Your computer keyboard works on this page too — the player above responds to the same QWERTY mapping as the main instrument, so you can follow along without leaving the article. For the full experience with drone and recording, open it in the web harmonium.
